What Happened To Boeing 787?

by Assad on 14/09/2009

B787 Boeing 787, an ultimate flying machine was scheduled to enter in service in August 2009, but what happened ?, were did it go and why is the date extended to the fourth quarter of 2010?.

Well Boeing company has been continuously giving excuses for it’s delay like for example shortage of supplies, out-of-sequence production work, limited software and systems integration activities, the extra delays are also a result of a machinists’ strike, for which Jetstar is not eligible for compensation, and a problem with the fasteners. This is not all, in Aug 08 due to prolong delays, first B787 order was cancelled by Azerbaijan Airlines and adding to this, the company’s share price has lost more than 50% of its value.

After interviewing the officials of Emirates Airline and Qatar Airways, the postpone is due to one another critical issue and that is structural failure. This failure was discovered just before the aircraft was due to take it’s first flight. The wings of the aircraft were not stable and could not hold the strong lift forces acting on it. The composite material which the wing was made off was just too weak and as a result the wing’s connection to the fuselage failed on the test bed. The company has grounded it’s first B787 prototype for further analysis on the wings.

Boeing is one of the biggest commercial aircraft manufacturing company and still they could not built a proper aircraft with proper wings. On the other hand Airbus industry is booming with the release of their new jet A380 and in future, planning to roll out their new aircraft A350 which is a rival to the failed Boeing 787. Many airlines have cancelled their B787 orders and other airlines like Emirates and Qatar are showing deep concerns and may change their mind to the upcoming A350 rather than B787, thus the Boeing industry is going in deep loss and might suspend their B787 project till the time it’s fly worthy.
